ANNABEL GILES DISCUSSES WHEN SHE STARTED TO NOTICE A DIFFERENCE AFTER SURGERY

So I went to see Mr. Hamada at the hospital, and the lady I was sitting next to said, “Oh, he’s brilliant, isn’t he?” I said, “Well, I don’t know, ’cause this is my first visit.” I was actually a bit sick of being told there was nothing wrong with my eyes. She said, “Oh, well I have traveled down from Aberdeen to see him.” I went, “Wow, okay, it’s gonna be great.”

I went to see him and he just said, “Yes, you’ve still got Stevens-Johnson’s syndrome. It doesn’t just disappear, it marches on, and it will keep getting worse, so we’ve got to do everything we can to stop it, and to stop your eyes from drying out, quite literally.” I thought, “Oh, God what does this mean.”

Then he plugged up my two little tear ducts with little plastic plugs, which didn’t hurt, but was a bit weird, to keep the tears going around my eyes a bit longer.

He said, “Don’t wear your lenses anymore ever.” Which was a bit shocking to me, because for my work I need my eyes, and I can’t always wear lenses, and I didn’t really want to be a permanent glasses wearer either.

He gave me a list of things that could be done, which was very reassuring, and I chose one of them. It also turned out that not only were my eyes drying out, but I had the beginnings of premature Cataracts as well.” So thankfully, I didn’t have to go through any of that, because he recommended lens replacement surgery, which I lept at, because that meant I didn’t have to wear anymore glasses or contact lenses again ever.
