During his tenure as a Clinical Lead of the Corneo plastic Unit and Eye Bank at Queen Victoria Hospital, he transformed the department into a leading centre for corneal and anterior segment surgery. His leadership was marked by the introduction of innovative therapies that improved the quality of life for countless patients across the UK, including many vulnerable individuals. Mr. Hamada’s contributions earned him two consecutive Patient Excellence Awards and a Staff Award for Best Team, recognising his efforts in modernising the department and driving advancements in patient care.
Since 2011, Mr Hamada had been a distinguished Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he imparts knowledge and elevates aspiring ophthalmologists and refractive surgeons. Additionally, he proudly serves as a faculty member for (MCh) in Surgery (ophthalmology) at Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent, and as an examiner at the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) in Paris, France.
Mr Hamada’s extensive fellowship training encompasses adult and paediatric cornea, refractive surgery, ocular surface, and the anterior segment. This unique expertise places him among a select group of surgeons worldwide capable of delivering highly specialised and intricate care. His fervent dedication and passion for ophthalmology have spearheaded modernisation initiatives in NHS cornea services at the Cornea Plastic Unit at Queen Vitoria Hospital. Here, he’s pioneered cutting-edge techniques in managing eye surface diseases, including the use of serum/plasma eye drops and amniotic membranes.
Among his notable innovations is the introduction of the advanced lamellar cornea surgery known as DMEK, revolutionising vision restoration for patients facing cornea clarity challenges. His pioneering work in this area has established him as a leading authority in the UK, prompting him to instruct colleagues and future corneal surgeons through various courses.
Beyond surgical innovations, Mr Hamada is a leader in corneal disease management. His groundbreaking publications and presentations at international conferences have gained him multiple acclaims and rewards. Additionally, he established the first consultant-lead dry eye clinic in both NHS and private sectors, solidifying his reputation as a foremost specialist in dry eye disease.
After many successful years in the NHS, Mr Hamada stepped away from his hospital post to focus on private practice. As the founder and Medical Director of Eye Clinic London, he now continues to lead in the field of ophthalmology, delivering care to patients from across UK and abroad. His private work builds on decades of clinical experience, combining innovation with the same commitment to excellence that defined his NHS career.
Mr Hamada’s commitment to advancing ophthalmology is evident through his founding of the Cornea Club, a global platform for cornea specialists to exchange knowledge. He’s also established the Ocular Surface Insight (OSI) magazine and OSI International Conferences, emphasising on eye surface diseases, including dry eye.
His passion for research is exemplified by his role as a leading investigator in the UK for presbyopia treatment using corneal inlays that measures only microns (Allotex). His other ongoing research involves:
- Examining the effectiveness of Cyclosporine 0,1% in severe keratitis (Santen sponsored Research)
- Leading the world’s largest adult group in Corneal Neurotisation
- Assessing Quality of Life (QoL) measures after corneal cross-linking
- Spearheading a Screening Programme for paediatric keratoconus
- Investigating outcomes of mouth-to-eye Epithelial Transplantation (MEET)
- Defining success in the management of the blepharokeratoconjuctivitis: evaluating activity and damage.
Through each project, Mr Hamada is actively influencing the future of ophthalmology with his dedication and innovative contributions.
Mr Hamada has various qualifications and training from prestigious institutions both nationally and internationally. His many years of education with dual fellowships in cornea, refractive surgery and paediatric cornea and anterior segment enabled him to succeed in the ophthalmology field and become a leader and an authority in the most complex corneal diseases, anterior eye reconstruction and complex refractive corrections.
